Eurythmy on December 21, 2025: The Fourth
Today we come to the fourth note of the scale. It is also called the fourth. After Christmas we will come to the fifth note of the scale, the fifth. The soul gesture related to the fourth is called “damn clever”. The one for the fifth is called “insight”.
Tuning in
I invite you all to join in. First we say to ourselves: I take my time, as if time were a substance, in order to arrive in myself. I invite it into my inner life, using my senses to perceive what is within: my breathing movement, the rhythms of the heart, the space of the ribcage back to the shoulder blades. I try to look inward with my senses in such a way that what is within feels perceived, responds, expands, makes me light and lifts me. I let this lightness and its warmth overflow and stream downwards, deep into the earth. And I feel how it straightens me up and makes me tall.
Repetition
Let us repeat the notes. The first was the prime, the keynote. There I am fully with myself. I feel my collarbone like the roof and my body like its house. Do, Do.
With the second I go from the collarbone out into the upper arm. There the note unfolds my creative will. Do, Re. And the hands show how much strength I have in the upper arm. Do, Re.
The third note streams from the collarbone into the forearm and enlivens my feeling there. I experience my garden of the soul in all its beauty. Do-Mi.
If we turn the forearm into the caring gesture of inwardness, the arms become a caring bowl for what sinks into them from the world of thought. And hands and fingers round into complete devotion. Do-Mi.
The Fourth
With the fourth I come to the garden gate. I am in the house: Do. I step outside: Re. I walk through the garden: Mi. I arrive at the garden gate: Fa.
With the fourth we reach the wrist. And the wrist raises the hand: Do-Fa.
The wrist forms a first completion on our way outward. It sets itself crosswise. I can hinge the hand up and down. When I slowly rotate the hands upwards, outwardly this is a signal to stop. Yet inwardly I look back once more with the back of the hand.
Do. Re. Mi. Fa.
Feel the difference between raising the palm or raising the back of the hand, or between sliding from the forearm into the wrist - into this cross-joint. Do not do it as though you were sending energy through it, as in martial arts; rather, arrive within it, so that the wrist widens and you take up space within it, in order to look at yourself once more from there.
Collarbone (Do), upper arm (Re), forearm (Mi), wrist (Fa).
What does it do within me when I look back to myself with the back of the hand? Try to perceive yourself, on the one hand, in your limitation - a small house in a great garden - and, on the other hand, to let that feel very pleasant. So: feel yourself at once small and growing, expanding. Do - Re - Mi - Fa.
Are you ready to take the step? Outwards on to the next note - or do you want to stay at home? What do you feel? Do - Re - Mi - Fa.
Clever
In the eurythmy figure “damn clever”, Steiner shows us what arises when I want to remain in the wrist. Then I use the looking-back to perceive myself in what I have. I am content and very self-confident: I am a super-baby!
Turn the right wrist like a screw, bring it in front of your chest and strengthen your central axis. Brace the left hand as a fist into your waist and strengthen your sense of self from there. The right hand becomes pointed, the left powerful - which is indicated as black in the eurythmy figure. Thought is not devoted to growth and to stepping onwards into the transcendent, but serves self-affirmation, the ego: I am damn clever.
Through this emphasis on the left-right plane, the plane of thinking, everyone can see it: turn the feet so that they look into this left-right, and in feeling make a strong crossing of left and right that comes to a point into the ground. And then the wrists: I am damn clever!
Do-Re-Mi-Fa: I have reached my goal, the garden gate: I am clever! Practise this “being clever” calmly a few times, and then feel the difference to the other Fourth.
The other Fourth
I set out on my way into the world of thought. I have reached the gate and see: I am ready to pass through it. Do - Re - Mi - Fa
